Kyoto Quilt Festival – March 2025 – Part 2
In March 2025 I was invited to show my work in a solo gallery at the Kyoto Quilt Festival, which was held in the Miyako Messe – the Kyoto International Exhibition Hall. This large building also houses the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design.
Adjacent to the entrance to the quilt show, was an exhibit of kimonos presented by the craft museum. The exhibit was named “Enjoying the Seasons #14”.

Quilt and textile artists are always keen to study kimono exhibits, because the traditional techniques are such an inspiration to us.

Shibori detail of plum blossoms in this cream, gold, red and black kimono.

The Japanese color aesthetic is often subtle, but entrancing.

This kimono has a snowy village which gives a sense of a quiet peaceful winter evening.

Another peaceful winter scene in muted neutral colors.

Shibori Dots make up the delicate clouds in this soft peach kimono.

This was my favorite, with the dreamy Aurora Borealis over a starlit mountain range, and forest silhouette.

Big heavy wet snow is falling in this black and white kimono. Quite a modern print design.
(Sorry about the reflections – these were behind glass.)

Beautiful golden details were the highlight in these 2 kimonos.

As you can see, in extraordinary kimonos such as these, the kimono is the silk canvas where the artist expresses their vision.
